Kids Korner Childcare - BGC Dovercourt Club

Welcome to Kids Korner Daycare!

Kids Korner Daycare, a Licensed Child Care center operated by the not-for-profit agency BGC Dovercourt Club, is located at 180 Westmoreland Avenue, Toronto, ON M6H 3A2. Our preschool program is play-based and follows Ontario’s How Does Learning Happen? curriculum, with the center licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Education and holding a Purchase of Service Agreement with the City of Toronto Children’s Services.

Curriculum

Our teachers are deeply involved with the children, paying close attention to their interests and nurturing their curiosity through carefully designed activities and open-ended questions. Our curriculum is designed to spark a love for learning, motivating children to explore, ask questions, find answers, and build self-confidence along the way.

Kids Korner Child Care creates an environment where children can start building essential social skills early, understanding the importance of these skills for their future success. In today’s interconnected world, it’s vital for kids to feel comfortable engaging with people from various cultural backgrounds. Our multicultural program provides this opportunity by introducing children to diverse cultures. Through our Events calendar, children gain a broad view of global traditions. Our Dramatic center includes costumes from around the world, and we’ve created a special book showcasing families in traditional attire from various cultures. Additionally, our teachers enrich daily interactions with songs and books from around the globe, further expanding the children’s cultural awareness.

At Kids Korner Childcare, we foster early literacy skills, phonological awareness, and a love for books right from the start. We help children learn essential book-handling skills, like holding a book properly and turning pages from right to left. Through interactive reading, we engage their minds by asking questions that prompt them to think about past, present, and future events. Additionally, we support children in recognizing letters in books and around their environment. In our toddler classrooms, children’s names are displayed prominently to help with name recognition.

During morning circle time, we use fun and engaging approaches, such as Jolly Phonics, songs, books, and visual tools, to make learning letters and words enjoyable. The program is rooted in multi-sensory learning, focusing on four primary learning styles: visual (seeing the letter), auditory (hearing the letter sound), kinesthetic (using body movement to form and trace letters), and tactile (tracing letters in materials like sand or on sensory surfaces like sandpaper).

Helping children learn to manage their emotions is key to their success beyond the classroom. At Kids Korner Childcare, we discuss classroom guidelines to nurture respect for others and the environment. We also introduce and encourage important social skills, including sharing, negotiating, being assertive, handling frustrations, understanding the need for quiet time, and developing empathy.

At Kids Korner Childcare, children are encouraged to express their creativity and imagination by exploring and working with various textures and art materials in their classrooms. They learn about primary colors and experiment with mixing them to create secondary colors. Using recycled and repurposed materials gathered by the classroom helps children develop an understanding of environmental respect and responsibility.

At Kids Korner Childcare, our Science Program invites children to explore the life cycles of various creatures and introduces basic animal classification. They learn about the six main animal groups: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. A favorite activity is studying the life cycle of a butterfly, often paired with reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

We also explore the life cycles of plants and their role in the environment, encouraging respect for plants and trees. Activities such as planting seeds, recycling, and reusing materials help children learn about caring for nature. Children are encouraged to explore their environment using all five senses and to be fully engaged in their surroundings. Additionally, Kids Korner offers gardening sessions twice a week, where children learn about nature, plants, and much more.

At Kids Korner Childcare, we incorporate math and number awareness into daily activities. Our educators work alongside children to practice sorting, create patterns, and recognize similarities and differences in classroom materials. They also use charts to visually reinforce these concepts, making learning interactive and engaging.

Educators carefully observe each child to identify emerging interests and developmental needs, planning activities that build on these interests to create a fun, engaging space for exploration and discovery. Our curriculum is designed to support the growth of essential math, language, and cognitive skills, providing a solid foundation for academic success. Children in our Emergent program are introduced to various cultural and scientific themes, helping them gain a well-rounded understanding of the world around them. They work closely with educators to develop social skills, learning to express their needs and interact positively with peers through play.

Through art and sensory play, children explore basic math concepts, experiment with trial and error, and expand their vocabulary, all while learning emotional regulation and self-control. Preschoolers also enjoy daily circle time, where they sing songs, read stories, and participate in group lessons that reinforce learning. Daily discussions about the calendar help children develop a sense of time and understand the world around them, including cultural celebrations and community events. This helps children recognize their role within their families, community, and the greater society.

Cognitive Development

  • Using language to express emotions and regulate behavior.
  • Representing familiar scenarios through dramatic play and building structures that reflect known environments.
  • Asking questions to clarify and encourage exploration, and using a growing vocabulary to describe observations.
  • Recalling previous knowledge to draw conclusions in new situations.
  • Classifying, sorting, counting, ordering, comparing, and quantifying, using math-related language to describe findings.

Language Development

  • Using both verbal and non-verbal communication to express needs, opinions, and emotions.
  • Expanding vocabulary and integrating descriptive language into everyday conversation, retelling stories, and explaining events.
  • Listening to others and understanding stories or information shared.
  • Participating in reciprocal conversations with relevant comments and responses.
  • Enjoying diverse literacy activities and showing awareness of sounds in words, recognizing and naming letter sounds.

Physical Development

  • Developing self-help skills, such as buttoning, zipping, putting on shoes, and using the toilet independently.
  • Using fine motor skills to hold a pencil and print, eat with utensils, cut paper with scissors, and handle small tools during play.
  • Improving physical abilities like throwing or kicking a ball, riding a bike, and expressing themselves through movement and dance.

At Kids Korner Childcare, our educators follow a yearly curriculum. This curriculum includes phonetic sound and number recognition, along with age-appropriate cultural and scientific concepts. The classroom materials are carefully selected to support cognitive, social, and motor skill development. Toddlers are encouraged to explore these materials, interact with their educators, and socialize with peers.

Art expression and sensory play are central to our daily programming, aiding in behavior and emotional regulation. As toddlers explore various materials in these activities, they build foundational skills needed for reading, writing, and understanding math concepts.

During circle time, toddlers develop essential life skills such as self-control, comprehension, and social skills. They participate in engaging songs, stories, and activities that enrich learning across many areas.
