Welcome to Dovercourt Teaching Garden!
The BGC Dovercourt Club is fortunate to have a Teaching Garden located at our main site, 180 Westmoreland Ave, facing the Dovercourt Park. We also have a bright and spacious room we call the “Greenhouse” where we raise seedlings in the colder seasons.
This program is a year-round and it is dedicated to promoting sustainable living and environmental education through hands-on gardening experiences and art. Our goal is to empower children and communities to cultivate a deeper connection with nature while fostering a greater understanding of the importance of biodiversity, food security, and ecological stewardship.
Through our educational programs and community events, we aim to inspire kids of all ages and their families to talk about and grow their own food, understand the importance of native plants, and create thriving habitats for wildlife in their backyards. By fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and providing practical skills in gardening, we strive to cultivate a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.
Some lessons may include, but are not limited to:
Gardening 101
Germination
Pollinators
Composting
Decomposers
Lifecycles (Butterfly, birds, frogs, bees, etc.)
Indigenous Practices (3 sisters, companion planting, etc.)
Hydroponics
And more!
The Garden to Table Program encourages members to experiment with different ingredients to create delicious and healthy recipes. It gives members the chance to try something new and practice hands-on and practical food preparation skills to make delicious food from scratch, using many ingredients that have been preserved from the Teaching Garden during the growing seasons.
This program runs every Tuesday and Thursday from September to June.
Some recipes we have created are:
